Forensic Consulting & Expert Testimony

Dr. Leonard Matheson and his mentees have provided decades of forensic rehabilitation consulting and expert services to attorneys, law firms, insurers, and other professionals involved in litigation throughout the United States.

Our forensic consulting team brings together more than 50 years of experience in rehabilitation, disability assessment, functional capacity evaluation, and industrial rehabilitation. Led by Dr. Len Matheson and supported by experienced rehabilitation professionals he has trained and mentored, our consultants bring a depth of clinical, academic, research, and practical experience that is uncommon in the field.

Dr. Matheson has been involved in the development of rehabilitation services and practices that are now widely used, including work hardening and work capacity evaluation. He has also contributed to the development of standards and practices used in functional capacity evaluation and industrial rehabilitation throughout the world.

As a member of Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) committees responsible for developing formal accreditation standards for industrial rehabilitation programs, and later serving as a CARF trustee for five years, Dr. Matheson has extensive knowledge of rehabilitation standards of care and professional practice. He has provided post-professional education in assessment and industrial rehabilitation to several thousand occupational therapists, physical therapists, physicians, psychologists, rehabilitation counselors, and vocational evaluators.

Experienced Forensic Consultants for Attorneys

Our consultants assist attorneys in understanding complex rehabilitation and disability issues and in evaluating the strengths and limitations of rehabilitation-related evidence. Depending on the needs of a case, services may include:

  • Review of medical, rehabilitation, vocational, and functional records
  • Review and interpretation of functional capacity and work capacity evaluations
  • Evaluation of assessment methods and conclusions
  • Analysis of rehabilitation needs and potential functional limitations
  • Review of rehabilitation plans and recommendations
  • Consultation regarding standards of care and professional practice
  • Identification of key issues, inconsistencies, and areas requiring additional investigation
  • Consultation with attorneys regarding rehabilitation-related aspects of a case
  • Preparation of written opinions and reports
  • Deposition and trial testimony
  • Expert testimony regarding functional capacity evaluation, work capacity evaluation, industrial rehabilitation, and related rehabilitation practices

Our approach is evidence-based and grounded in both research and decades of hands-on clinical experience. Effective forensic opinions require more than clinical expertise alone; they require careful analysis of the available evidence, appropriate application of established standards and practices, and the ability to clearly explain the basis for professional opinions.

A Team Approach

Dr. Matheson's experience and contributions to the field provide an important foundation for our forensic services. He has also trained and mentored rehabilitation professionals who have developed their own extensive clinical and professional expertise.

When appropriate, our team can match a case with the consultant whose education, clinical experience, research background, and area of expertise best fit the issues involved. This allows attorneys to access specialized rehabilitation knowledge while maintaining the high standards of evidence-based practice that have characterized EpicRehab's work for decades.
